About Denise Moore, RP (#009707)

Denise completed her Masters in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy at Wilfred Laurier University and is a member of the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario. Denise has been a long-time trusted member of the MyLife team thanks to completing her externship with us. We’re happy to now have her join us as Registered Psychotherapist.

In addition to her work at MyLife, Denise gained valuable experience helping a range of individuals as a mental health counselling intern at the Upper Grand Family Health Team. She helped her clients work through a variety of emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, career choices, relationships, family life, grief, and health challenges.

Denise’s current focus and passion is helping clients who are struggling with unacknowledged suffering and trauma. Through her own personal and professional experience, she understands how early childhood experiences such as abuse, neglect, and unstable relationships can negatively impact us later in life. Denise provides a secure and supportive therapeutic relationship that allows for a deeper healing to take place. She helps her clients move beyond their anxiety, addictions, depression, shame, and grief that can be rooted in the past.

Denise takes a holistic approach to healing and works with clients experientially as they explore their emotions. Using a combination of body awareness, emotion focused therapies, mindfulness and compassionate exploration, clients have an opportunity to notice the links between their physical, mental, and spiritual selves. Denise helps her clients identify what areas of their lives may be out of balance and how to bring them back into alignment.

Having had a career in music management, Denise came to the counselling profession later in life and draws from many lived experiences and adventures that have taken her across the country and around the world. Settling back in Elora, Ontario, Denise pursued continuing education in trauma training with Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk and Compassionate Inquiry with Dr. Gabor Mate. She also completed past training in Shambhala meditation to help support clients in being grounded in their own lives. Denise continues her own self exploration and self-care as part of her commitment to providing effective support to her clients.

Outside of the office, Denise is a devoted parent to her teenage son, avid nature lover, and arts enthusiast for the abundant offerings in Wellington County.

About Chris Cebulski

Chris received his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo and his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. He completed his internship at MyLife Counselling under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon. We invited Chris to join our team because of his passion to help clients and his dedication to excellence in his practice.

Individual clients and couples would describe Chris as having a calming and grounding presence. He is deeply committed to helping clients not only feel supported and understood, but also find better ways to manage and overcome anxiety, depression, self-worth, and relationship issues. Having spent a great deal of time discovering his own personal values and meaning in life, Chris also helps clients connect with their true selves and navigate existential concerns. It is through his own journey with overcoming self-doubt, low confidence, and anxiety that Chris was drawn to the practice of psychotherapy. He understands how draining and consuming it can be when we get caught up in our problematic thoughts and feelings. Chris is a firm believer that if we can change the way we relate to our inner experiences, we can focus our energy on moving our lives in a valued direction.

Chris has accumulated a wide range of experience working with people across a variety of mental health settings. As a Behavioural Counsellor at Stonehenge Therapeutic Community and Addictions Counsellor with the Portage Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Elora, Chris has gained profound empathy and skill in helping adults and youth struggling with addiction and mental health issues. As a Residential Counsellor at WAYS, Chris supported a wide variety of youth with mental health, relationship, and addictions-related issues. Chris is also a member of 7 Cups of Therapy, which is the world’s largest online emotional support system offering individuals one-on-one chat-based mental health support for anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.

As a volunteer Emergency Unit Supervisor at Grand River Hospital, Chris gained valuable experience providing crisis support and assistance to Emergency staff, individuals, and families. As a Mental Health Unit Creative Therapy Leader at the same hospital, Chris helped people make meaning of their unique experiences through therapeutic art activities. Chris also volunteered with Family and Children Services as a Mentor to at-risk youth and lead activities that helped them develop more positive self-concepts and self-esteem. These experiences have shaped Chris as a human being and guide his practice of providing a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental therapeutic space for clients.

Chris is trained in a variety of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Depression and Anxiety Disorders, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and is a candidate for certificates in Addictions and Mindfulness training at Wilfred Laurier University.

Chris is interested in Existential and Buddhist philosophy and has an innate curiosity about the ups and downs of life and what bring each of us meaning. Additionally, Chris engages in regular meditation practice, which has influenced his therapeutic approach. He winds down by spending quality time with family and his partner of 5 years. He is passionate about all things outdoors and is an advocate for the healing power of nature. Chris enjoys long-distance running, hiking, and archery.

About Sandra Karlin

Sandra Karlin is a Registered Psychotherapist and completed her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Sandra earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and minored in Communications Studies and Sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University. She went on to complete her counselling internship at MyLife under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon, RP #2331. We invited Sandra to join MyLife as one of our trusted therapists thanks to her proven track record of helping her clients through life’s most difficult challenges.

Sandra is passionate about helping people overcome a range of mental health and life challenges. Over the years, she has gained experience working with adults of all ages and backgrounds. Sandra’s experience providing one-on-one support to individuals at Chartwell Retirement Residences helps her appreciate the importance of her clients’ feeling a sense of connection and understanding at all stages in their lives. Her work at McLennan Speech and Language speech clinic and Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region community centre inspired her to help people overcome loneliness, stress, and to develop ways to build more positive self-concepts and body image.

Sandra also enjoys working with family issues. During her time at the developmental centre KidsAbilty, she saw firsthand the challenges families face in supporting children with special needs. She also gained a deeper understanding of how those with “invisible” disabilities are frequently misunderstood and labeled. She strives to support family members in their efforts to empower their children in realizing their full potential.

Sandra is especially skilled at helping people navigate major life transitions including career changes, entering or leaving school, relationship transitions, and cultural shifts. She understands how these life altering changes can lead to a sense of loss, anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt. Sandra helps her clients regain a sense of confidence in who they are by helping them work through the loss, supporting them in facing their fears, and helping them identify their strengths as they rebuild their sense of self.

Sandra is also excited to be working with couples struggling to talk openly about unexpressed feelings, relationship roadblocks and intimacy. Her goal is to help couples grow together instead of feeling alone and at odds. Her training in Gottman Method couples counselling means she’s able to offer structured and practical approaches in improving communication, friendship, and intimacy. Sandra believes that relationships are a cornerstone of living a full life and that being in a healthy relationship supports one’s overall mental health.

In her downtime, Sandra keeps her life in balance through physical activities such as squash, hiking and playing with her chocolate Labrador puppy. She also loves to travel and to experience different cultures as the locals do!

About Steph Koutsoulianos

Stephanie is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) #14536 and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and minored in Family and Child Studies at the University of Guelph and her Master of Counselling Psychology through Adler University. She finished her internship at MyLife under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon. We invited Stephanie join MyLife as a trusted associate thanks to her proven ability of helping a wide range of clients in need.

Stephanie’s history of helping people started early as a student. She played multiple roles at the University of Guelph including volunteering as a note taker with Student Accessibility Services, working as the team leader coordinating the SafeWalk program, and volunteering as a Peer Helper with Co-operative Education and Career Services. Her experience working with a wide range of students led her to appreciate the challenges and stressors they face and the often-unseen toll it can take on their mental health. She took her interest in helping others a step further as a distress line volunteer at the Torchlight Distress Centre in Guelph. She provided compassionate and non-judgmental support to callers experiencing a range of issues including anxiety, stress, racism, loneliness, grief, loss, and relationship issues.

Thanks to her training and diverse range of experiences, Stephanie is skillful at listening to her client’s needs and developing clear and concrete strategies for helping them through their issues. Clients would describe her approach as grounded, compassionate, and goal oriented. Not only is she an attentive listener, but she is also highly skilled at helping clients identify their core values. Stephanie’s training and experience working with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps clients use their values to guide them to do things that will enhance their lives while effectively handling the pain and suffering that come with being human.

Stephanie draws heavily from mindfulness-based approaches in her work with clients. Mindfulness helps people become more aware of their choices and thoughts instead of simply reacting to situations in unhelpful ways. Clients will find that she is eager to work with their counselling preferences, help create goals collaboratively, and work towards a mutual understanding of what “getting better” uniquely means for them. She always acknowledges her clients’ unique lived experiences in terms of gender, sexual orientation, culture, socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity.

Stephanie has special interest and training in helping clients whose struggles stem from discrimination, racism, bias, and stigma. She is an ally of the LGBTQ2+ community and understands that safety and trust is created together with clients one session at a time. She is a passionate advocate for inclusive and equitable treatment of people accessing mental health services and draws from her own lived experiences as a multiethnic individual. Stephanie is prepared to deal with the unique challenges cross-cultural individuals face.

Out of the office, Stephanie enjoys reading (both fiction and non-fiction), weightlifting and strength-training, and can often be found on FaceTime with her long-distance partner. She sees herself as a perpetual student who is eager to learn and aspires to pursue further education and training in the field of sex therapy.

About Erin Barr, RP

Erin Barr (she-her) is a Registered Psychotherapist with over 16 years of experience. She completed her Master’s of Therapy from the University of Illinois-Chicago and has since worked in Canada over the past 14 years with a variety of organizations.

Erin works closely with both adults and youth (5 and up) and offers counselling for individuals, parents, and families. She has an abundance of experience working with people struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, and trauma. Erin is extremely warm and down-to-earth with clients. She draws from a variety of therapeutic approaches including specialized training in Trauma Informed Therapy, DBT, Narrative Therapy, and Art Therapy.

Diversity and equity within all spaces is a passion of Erin’s. She actively seeks opportunities to develop knowledge and skills to support conversations with people who have experienced oppression and discrimination in a safe, open, and collaborative way.

For the past 12 years, Erin has helped Deaf and hard of hearing children, youth, and families dealing with mental health issues through the PAH program in Milton, Ontario. As a Child and Family Therapist, she provided individual, family and group therapy using a strengths-based perspective. At New Leaf Psychology Centre in Milton, she also facilitated Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) educational and support groups for parents whose children were in a DBT program.

Erin is a strong advocate of survivors of sexual trauma. She provides a safe place to process the sadness, anger, and shame that survivors often struggle with while also helping them rebuild trusting relationships in their lives. Having directly attended court hearings as a support to survivors, Erin understands the challenges and courage it takes to speak out about sexual violence. Erin started her career as a sexual assault counselor at the Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault in Illinois. There, she helped survivors 3 to 18 years of age recover from the impacts of sexual trauma. After moving to Canada, Erin continued to help adult survivors of sexual trauma at the Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services in Simcoe, Ontario.

Erin also enjoys collaborating with parents and youth around other issues such as behavioural challenges, difficulties attending school, and mental health concerns. Erin draws from her own experience as a parent of two young children. She appreciates how parents can feel disempowered, confused, and judged while trying to do their best to support their children through difficult times. She understands how parents can struggle with their own histories of trauma or mental health and how this can sometimes get in the way of being the parent they would like to be. Thanks to her personal and professional experience, Erin validates and encourages parents to trust in themselves and find ways to make their own well-being a priority.

When she’s not in the office, Erin is a self-proclaimed home body who happens to also enjoy travelling with her husband of 13 years and her two children. What truly brings her joy are times with family, snuggling with her feline furry babies, and taking long walks whenever time allows. She enjoys running (in warm weather only), baking, and reading. Her creative outlet currently is making on-line photobooks of all her travels and family events.

About Alia Ziesman

Alia Ziesman is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) #13220 and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Guelph in addition to her Master’s in International Development and Sociology. Alia went on to complete her second Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. Alia has 15 years of volunteer experience working with diverse populations within her community. Since 2012, she has served on the Leadership Council for the Guelph-Wellington Local Immigration Partnership and has previously volunteered with Women in Crisis, United Way, and Immigrant Services.

While living abroad for several years, Alia realized her passion for social justice was rooted in helping the individual. This understanding led her to pursue a career as a psychotherapist. As someone who has attended therapy for more than 20+ years, she knows it is challenging to be vulnerable with another person. As a mother, she also understands the challenges and changes of becoming of a parent which has inspired her to help other women through pregnancy, postpartum, and all steps of motherhood. Drawing from her own experience with traumatic loss, she will meet you where you are and guide you through your own grief. Regardless of the issue, Alia will always provide you with a non-judgmental, trustworthy, supportive, and professional space where you can be yourself.

Alia can help you identify and better understand your thoughts, experiences, and relationships to help you feel more empowered and live your fullest life. Through mindfulness, she’s able to help you get out of your head and into the present moment, which can help you worry less and appreciate the little moments in life. You will also laugh, as Alia doesn’t believe therapy always has to be serious! About Paula Eagles

Paula is a Registered Psychotherapist and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. In 2016, nearly three decades after completing her B.A. in Psychology-Neuroscience at Laurentian University, Paula returned to academia and completed her master’s degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology at Adler Graduate Professional School.

Paula brings a warm, compassionate, friendly, and engaging style that is client-centered and collaborative. As a mature and eclectic individual, she imbues a natural sense of ease and adventure into her therapy sessions. Paula is committed to creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where clients are supported, honored, and encouraged to freely explore all areas of concern. Paula helps her clients turn insights into action as they create new lifestyle choices and healthy beliefs about themselves, their relationship with others, and their place in the world.

Paula is especially interested in working with adolescents, adults, and couples who are experiencing the effects of trauma, anxiety and depression, relationship issues, and difficult life transitions. Paula’s clinical training and experience working with Psychologists and assisting with psychological assessments also helps her identify issues requiring specialized supports, such as ADHD, learning disabilities, Autism/Asperger’s, and serious mental health issues.

Over the past few years, Paula has provided specialized treatment for clients experiencing PTSD and complex trauma. She has helped these clients work through a variety of concerns including occupational stress, secondary trauma and compassion fatigue, childhood trauma/abuse, grief and loss, adjustment issues, substance use, phobias, and the impacts of motor vehicle accidents (MVA) including chronic pain and traumatic brain injury. Paula also draws from her own life experience, as she has worked through the effects of childhood trauma, parental divorce and family estrangements, tragic losses of loved ones, chronic pain, and the physical and emotional effects of multiple car accidents.

While many clients choose to work on singular issues, like developing more effective coping strategies or interpersonal skills, others search for deeper answers in pursuit of their authentic selves. Paula is especially keen on helping individuals who are struggling with issues related to personal identity, belonging, life satisfaction, and existential-spiritual concerns. To help these clients work toward deeper insights and a more transformative experience, she uses several experiential techniques that involve visualizations, metaphors, archetypes, and dreams. She also has a special interest in working with people who are “highly sensitive” or empathic.  As a “highly sensitive person” herself, Paula understands the unique struggles that often accompany this set of personality traits.

As a life-long learner who thrives on personal growth, Paula brings a wealth of life experience to her work as a psychotherapist. Her previous ventures include a career as a Correctional Officer with young offenders, owning/operating two businesses (a multi-faceted holistic-metaphysical business and a small fine arts/design business), work in psychometric testing, workshop facilitation, and creative activities including theatre arts (acting, directing, etc.). Through her work and extensive practicum placements (1000+ hours) Paula has had the privilege of engaging with a wide range of culturally diverse clients, from young children to older adults. She has worked in a variety of settings, including private practice clinics (psychology and integrative health), self-employed retail/clinic, correctional facilities, and academic and occupational settings (on-site testing).

Outside the office, Paula enjoys spending time with her husband of 25 years and their highly social cat. She loves to socialize with friends and family, which usually involves lively and deep discussions about the state of humanity and the world at large, or the odd game of Scrabble. Otherwise, her interests involve creative and spiritual (non-denominational) activities, writing poetry when inspiration strikes, holistic healing, home renovations and gardening, and indulging in “good TV” on endless topics.

About Mandy Cunnigton

Mandy is a Registered Psychotherapist with over 15 years of experience in the field of mental health. She is a registered member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and holds a diploma in counselling from the Vancouver College of Counsellor Training.

Mandy was born and raised in Guelph and traveled to Vancouver, BC to complete specialized training in counselling. Mandy helped develop the Guelph Crisis Line in its early days and went on to provide support to people in distress for six years. She’s helped people struggling with sexual abuse, addictions, depression, anxiety, suicide, victims of crime, homelessness, trauma, and loss. Mandy’s work as an addictions counsellor at the Phoenix Society in Vancouver has also prepared her to deal with the realities and impacts of addiction on individuals and their families.

Mandy has a special interest in supporting individuals struggling with grief and loss. In particular, she’s known for her experience in helping people through such unacknowledged losses as pet loss. She helped develop some of the first pet loss support groups in Vancouver and collaborated with veterinarians in the area to help their clients cope with the pain and grief of losing their animal companions. Mandy also specializes in working closely with survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She’s helped many people through the shame, anger, sadness and guilt that survivors often struggle with years after the abuse.

Mandy also knows first-hand the reality of loss and abuse. She’s faced the difficult journey of supporting a parent through a terminal cancer diagnosis. As a passionate animal lover, she’s cared for a number of pets over her lifetime and dealt with the grief and loss that is part of loving them. Mandy is also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and understands the courage it takes to start healing from the past.

Mandy draws from a variety of therapeutic approaches including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. She has specialized training in Gestalt Therapy and Existential Analysis.

Clients describe Mandy as incredibly compassionate, attuned, and welcoming. With her advanced training in Existential Analysis, she helps clients face the challenges in their lives head on and discover new ways of overcoming them. In working with Mandy, you’ll get to the root of your issues instead of just sticking to the surface.

Mandy is currently the devoted parent of a 9-year-old dachshund named Zeus who delights in warming his belly near fireplaces and chewing pillows of any kinds. When Mandy isn’t in the office, you’ll find her scrap-booking and being tirelessly silly with her nieces and nephews!

About Alexander (Sandy) Maclean

Sandy is a Registered Psychotherapy (Qualifying) and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. He received a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in philosophy from the University of Guelph and completed his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. We’re excited to have Sandy return to MyLife after completing his internship with us under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon.

Sandy views his clients as the experts on their experience. He likens himself as a guide helping people reach their own desired outcomes and existential meaning rather than just focusing on what is wrong or “disordered.” Sandy can put himself in his clients’ shoes thanks to his personal therapy experiences over the years for learning differences, depression and trauma. Although much of his own therapy was helpful, he’s also learned a great deal from what wasn’t helpful in terms of how other therapists related to him.

In particular, Sandy has learned the importance of routinely checking in with clients every session to make sure they are feeling truly heard, understood, and respected in light of their values and identities. He believes therapy is not simply the treatment of symptoms or rushing to solve a problem, but an acknowledgement of the whole person – including their unique preferences and world views.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Sandy has seen a lack of masculine identifying voices from within the community when looking for his own therapist. For this reason, he finds it extremely important to be a positive and supportive male voice within the therapeutic space.

Sandy is especially passionate about helping people develop healthy and happy relationships that fit for them. His specialized training in Gottman relationship therapy means he’s capable of creating a safe and constructive space for people in relationships to improve their communication, enhance their friendship, and deepen their intimacy.

Outside of the office, Sandy continues to mentor and volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters. He’s continually inspired by watching the young people he volunteers with improve their confidence through a safe and trusting relationship. He is also the only student member of a team working to a create a certificate in Humanistic Counselling which focuses on the moral obligations of counsellors towards their clients and each other.

In his down time, Sandy is a voracious reader of everything from superhero comics and D&D (Nightwing and Superman are personal favorites), to works of philosophy and everything in between. He and his partner are also avid climbers and horror movie buffs, and he moonlights as a rock-climbing instructor at the Guelph Grotto climbing gym.

Eve also knows what it’s like to be both a client and a therapist. She has struggled and learned a great deal from overcoming her own severe anxiety and panic attacks. Most recently, she worked on overcoming post-partum anxiety and depression after the birth of her first child. Eve uses a range of effective counselling models including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Art Psychotherapy. She’s also completed advanced training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy through the University of Toronto School of Social Work.

As a support worker at Wyndham House in Guelph, Nick helped youth struggling with homelessness, employment, addictions, and the law through a combination of emotional support, life skills, and fostering positive connections in the community. He listened carefully to their individual stories and learned the importance of building trusting relationships instead of just giving advice.

He worked closely with parents helping them develop healthier attachments and parenting skills through the Circles of Security program. During his time supporting families, he’s come to understand the impact past trauma can have on relationships of all kinds - especially when it comes to attachment between parents and children.

Clients would describe Nick’s approach as calming, grounded and focused. He is not only an extremely attentive listener but also skilled at helping his clients identify and leverage their strengths. Nick’s training and experience with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps clients develop healthier mindsets and learn the practical skills to improve their mood going forward in their lives. He also appreciates what it’s like being a client thanks to the personal work he’s done on communication, relationships, and developing healthy boundaries.

Nick also loves helping couples at all stages of their relationships. His ongoing training in Gottman Method Couples Counselling helps him guide couples how to communicate more effectively, problem solve as a team, and improve their friendship and intimacy. He believes couples can rebuild trust and connection by directly working through past hurts and betrayal.

Outside of the office, Nick enjoys backcountry camping with his wife and three children, creating art and music, and connecting with the Guelph community.

About Marina Daif

Marina is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at York University and her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. She completed her internship at MyLife Counselling under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon. Marina had such positive feedback from her clients that we insisted she join MyLife as one our full-time therapists! Marina works with both individuals and couples and provides counselling in both English and Arabic.

Marina brings a wealth of experience and compassion to her work with clients. As a Special Needs Service Provider at the Canadian Coptic Centre, she volunteered alongside mental health professionals and spiritual leaders for over five years. She supported people struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem, body-image, religion and culture-related issues. As a Behavioural Counsellor at Stonehenge Therapeutic Community, Marina helped adult residents struggling with substance use and addictions work towards developing healthy and sober lives. Marina is grateful and inspired by the personal stories of change and hope that people shared with her over the years.

Marina’s compassion for her clients also stems from the work she has done in improving her own mental health. As a person who experienced bullying, low self-esteem, self-criticism, and anxiety early in life, Marina understands the negative spiral that can lead to feeling alone and isolated. Marina came to appreciate the help she received and how she was able to develop her own genuine sense of self-compassion and self-acceptance. Thanks to her own experience, Marina is able to help her clients feel safe, supported, and understood as they work towards developing their own self-compassion - a key trait that she believes helps people heal and create happier and more wholesome lives.

About Gina Markle, RSW (#833432)

Gina is a Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree from Wilfrid Laurier University.  Over the past 8 years, she’s gained a wide range of experience helping children and adults across both community and hospital settings.

Gina loves supporting youth 12 and up, and currently works with children and adolescents experiencing acute mental health concerns at Grand River Hospital. She’s able to connect with younger clients and understand their struggles from their own unique points of view whether it’s anxiety, depression, or behavioural issues. Gina appreciates that when a child is suffering, the entire family can be impacted. When working with younger clients, she strives to support parents and caregivers via education, support, and consultation. Thanks to her experience working at Grand River Hospital in the Preschool Diagnostic & Treatment Services, Gina understands when to refer children and youth for further assessment should more serious mental health concerns arise.

Gina is also experienced working with post-secondary students and a wide range of adults. She understands that seeking counselling can sometimes feel intimidating and difficult to know where, or how to begin. She makes that first step easier thanks to her extremely warm and welcoming personality. She listens carefully to each of her clients to understand what they uniquely need to feel safe and supported. Her training in CBT and solution focused therapies also helps her create achievable goals with her clients to help them get where they want to be. Gina’s clients walk away not only feeling truly heard but also empowered with new coping skills that they can apply long after therapy ends.

In addition, Gina has specialized experience supporting people who have lost loved ones. Her experience as a bereavement group facilitator at Bereaved Families of Ontario has helped her understand the many ways people experience and work through grief and loss. Gina provides her clients with a safe place to explore the meaning and feelings related to their loss which, in some cases, can include anger, guilt, and despair. Gina helps her clients work through these many layers of grief to eventually arrive at a sense of hope and enduring connection with their lost loved ones.

Gina is also passionate about supporting individuals who have experienced violence. At the Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services, she helped countless individuals work through the anxiety, self-doubt, and shame that results from physical and emotional abuse. She also appreciates that leaving such relationships often isn’t easy. Gina helps her clients develop the self-awareness, resources, and skills necessary to begin setting healthy boundaries in all relationships, learn how to recognize and respond to mistreatment, and to identify what truly caring and loving relationship can look like.

In her leisure time, Gina is a jazz and blues singer, and loves to explore and appreciate music of all kinds! She is a nature enthusiast, and can be found hiking, exploring new places, swimming, cooking, doing yoga, catching up on her favourite Netflix shows, and spending time adventuring and connecting with her loved ones.

About Natalie Thomas

Natalie Thomas is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and completed her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Natalie completed her internship at MyLife Counselling under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon RP #2331.  We invited Natalie to join the MyLife team as a full associate thanks to her proven care and support of her clients throughout her internship.

Natalie graduated from the University of Guelph with a BA and MA in Philosophy and went on to complete her PhD at the University of Waterloo. She specialized in ethics and philosophy of mind and has advocated for animal and environmental ethics in her research, publications, and volunteer work. Her previous experience in philosophy helps her understand and explore her clients’ lives on a deeper level, including being able to explore questions and issues related to life’s meaning and purpose. Her background in ethics helps to ensure her clients are treated with the greatest dignity, care, and respect while supporting them.

Natalie also worked at the Student Accessibility Services centre at the University of Guelph in various roles including as an individual student advisor where she came to enjoy the individual time spent supporting students with disabilities with their personal and academic challenges. After many years of teaching, she decided to pursue her MA in Counselling Psychology to be able to work with individuals and couples as a psychotherapist.

Having a family history of mental illness and having gone through many personal losses herself, she has developed compassion for those who have suffered through similar experiences. She has also struggled with burnout, severe anxiety, and stress from academic and advocacy work. Providing individuals and couples with a safe, compassionate space to support them working through their own unique challenges is her main goal as a therapist.

Natalie plans to continue her research and training in trauma-sensitive, mindful, and compassionate approaches to working with various forms of grief with a special focus on eco and climate loss and anxiety. She presented her current work in this area at a global mindfulness summit in 2022 and is open to including this work into her practice with clients.

Through her love for learning and desire to grow she has taken several courses and certificates in mindfulness meditation and compassion practices such as Compassion Cultivation Training. She has also taken trainings and courses in grief and trauma counselling through Wilfrid Laurier University as well as Gottman Method couples counselling.

Natalie continues to teach at Universities and Colleges and enjoys teaching a First Year Seminar on happiness that includes philosophical and psychological research and practices on the subject. Outside the office she loves spending time in nature hiking, gardening, kayaking, and walking with her two beloved dogs. She also practices meditation, yoga and creative arts and crafts.

About Emily Barrie

Emily Barrie is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with a master’s degree in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy from Wilfrid Laurier University and an Honours Degree in Human Rights and Gender Studies from Carleton. She is an Integrative Somatic Therapist, bodyworker, and trauma-informed movement educator, with over 10 years of experience leading community somatic practice.

Emily collaborates experientially with clients to support them in connecting to their body as a key source of wisdom and healing. She has completed over one thousand hours of training in body-based approaches to healing trauma, including yoga, therapeutic applications of expressive arts, and Integrative Somatic Therapy Practice. Emily is called forth by creative and embodied ways of integrating trauma and loves to collaborate with clients to incorporate gentle arts- and play-based approaches in her somatic therapy work.

Somatic therapy is a body-based and trauma-informed approach that centers the experience of the body and nervous system in therapy. This approach seeks to invite more safety into one’s body by growing our capacity to be with emotions and sensations. A somatic therapy session might include breathing, gentle movement, creative expression in the form of art or play, or sensorimotor processing of emotions or sensations.

Emily’s approach is gentle, client-centered, and naturally holistic. By inviting the body, breath, and creative expression into session, clients may also wish to invite spiritual or ancestral/cultural practices which feel meaningful for them. Emily seeks to create space for clients to explore all aspects of their identity as desired, including spiritual, ancestral, or transpersonal dimensions.

Prior to completing her master’s degree in Psychotherapy, Emily was a Full-Spectrum Birth worker supporting survivors of trauma and their families through all stages of the perinatal experience. In this work, Emily developed a special appreciation for working with 2SLGBTQ+ folks as they navigate experiences of conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Emily completed her internship at Hope for Families Counselling Centre, where she offered somatic trauma therapy and ran community drop-in spaces for gender creative families. Emily is a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and is enthusiastic about supporting individuals, couples and families through issues related to 2SLGBTQ+ identity, gender transitioning, and finding and embodying queer joy.

In her personal life, Emily is an artist and musician, and community volunteer. She loves spending time with her friends and family, especially in nature, and going on bike rides with her kid.

About Thomas Wright

Thomas Wright is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) currently completing his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. He has an undergraduate degree in Adult Development, Families, and Wellbeing from the University of Guelph and is certified in Concurrent Addictions and Mental Health through the University of Toronto. Thomas is completing his final internship hours at MyLife under the supervision of our Clinical Director Mark Nixon, RP #2331 and provides individual and couples counselling at a reduced rate.

Since 2010, Thomas has been working at the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo/Wellington on the Flexible Assertive Community Treatment Team and the Early Psychosis Intervention Team. In his role as a case manager, he continues to support people living with significant mental health and addictions challenges.

Thomas draws from his extensive experience in mental health and two decades of teaching improvisation theatre to help individuals, couples, and families cultivate positive change in their lives. He believes that by exploring the dark spots within ourselves and uncovering our strengths, we’re able to find creative solutions to address the unique challenges we face.

Thomas helps people find the courage to confront life’s challenges, recognizing that we must first become self-aware before seeking a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. He believes this awareness allows us to live a more fulfilling, meaningful, and purposeful life.

Thomas has a calm, creative, and authentic approach. He embraces his clients’ diversity while helping them heal from past trauma, regain confidence and direction during stressful times, and build more fulfilling connections with the people and activities in their lives.

He has experience working with individuals struggling with depression, loss of motivation, mood changes, anxiety, extreme fears, personality issues, and addictions. He has a particular interest in supporting people with complex histories of mental health and addictions, challenges with managing stress and anxiety, and building and repairing intimate relationships.

When working with couples, Thomas recognizes that the demands of life and having a family can pull us in many directions, making it difficult to maintain an intimate connection, feel desire, or find time for each other. He believes in the importance of helping couples rediscover the core experiences that help them rebuild closeness and connection. This includes helping couples get past criticism and defensiveness, find ways to heal broken trust, and learn how to really listen and be there for each other in their day-to-day lives. Thomas is skilled at creating a safe space where couples can work on rekindling their friendship, passion, and genuine desire to know and support each other.

Using a trauma and addictions-informed lens, Thomas leverages such evidence-based approaches as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, psychodrama, Gottman’s couples counselling, and Gestalt therapy.

Thomas was born and raised in Guelph where he now currently lives with his wife and two young children. He is a family man, a passionate friend, and a deep thinker. He is an avid football (soccer) fan and loves live theatre. His capacity and enthusiasm for enduring marathon discussions about the existential thoughts around life, death, and being human are endless. He also enjoys a good laugh about the absurdity and wonder of the human experience.

“I hope you will reach out to meet me and choose not to face your struggles alone. There is always hope; sometimes, it just takes courage to start the conversation.”

Emily began working in the field with Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres, and then continued on to Stonehenge Therapeutic Community, where she supported individuals to make changes to their substance use, meet their goals, and develop productive coping strategies.

With experience supporting individuals through their recovery, Emily is passionate about working with young adults and adults across a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, substance use, stress management and emotion regulation, and any life transitions. She uses a strength-based and trauma-informed approached throughout her work to create meaningful and positive alliances with each of her clients.

Emily draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, Mindfulness and Solution-Focused Therapy to provide individualized support for every client. She demonstrates compassion and values fostering a strong therapeutic relationship. Emily understands how difficult it can be to talk about how you’re feeling and she strives to create a space that is safe and nonjudgmental for anyone she works with.

Outside of the office, Emily enjoys spending time on outdoor adventures with her partner of 7 years and their 3 dogs. Other parts of her self-care include yoga, candle-making, and spending time with her family.

Emily is highly experienced working with adults, teens, children, and families through a range of issues including anxiety, depression, anger, and complex family issues.

Emily completed her internship at Carizon Family and Community Services in Kitchener where she helped children, adolescents, and adults in collaboration with Women’s Crisis Services and the Family Violence Project. Her work at Stonehenge Therapeutic Community as a Behavioural Counsellor has also prepared her to support people experiencing addiction and trauma.

In addition to her work at MyLife Counselling, Emily is also the Program Coordinator and Child and Youth Worker for the EIEIO program at Woodview Mental Health and Autism Services in Burlington. There, she helps children showing signs of significant social, emotional and/or behavioural problems who are having difficulty at school and at home. Emily has a special interest in helping people struggling with an existing or new diagnosis of a chronic illness. As a person managing her own chronic illness, she understands the complex physical and emotional needs that accompany the healing and relapse process. Emily helps people regain a positive sense of self and meaning after their diagnosis, in addition to teaching people how to assertively communicate their new needs with others.

Emily is warm, grounded, and down-to-earth in her counselling approach. Her specialized training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy means she is highly skilled at helping people learn how to cope with overwhelming emotions such as anger, anxiety, and sadness in their lives. Her background in Positive Psychology enables her to help individuals discover their strengths and apply these towards living more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

In her personal life, Emily incorporates music and mindfulness as ways of maintaining her own well-being. She also balances her time in the office with her love of outdoor activities such as gardening and winter camping.

About Lauren McGinty

Lauren is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) #14579 and member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and a student member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. She has her Bachelor of Arts with a specialization in drawing and painting with a minor in museum studies from the University of Guelph. She is currently acquiring her Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and is thrilled to be under the supervision of MyLife’s Clinical Director Mark Nixon for her internship.

Coming from a non-traditional psych background, Lauren has a range of unique life experiences in which to draw from and relate to. From competing across North America as an equestrian, assistant producing (& even spearheading Canadian sales for a time) at Toronto’s iconic Second City, and acting in television and stage while in a metal band, she understands the demands of a high-performance lifestyle, and the challenges and delights of relating to a wide range of personalities.

Resonating with the universal nature of existential philosophy Lauren draws from a range of therapeutic modalities so as to have the best fitting tools for each clients specific needs. She also takes a peer-based approach having completed CMHA’s Foundations of Peer Support and their Skills for Safer Living, drawing from her own experiences with mental health challenges and the systems around it.

Lauren prefers a holistic and strength based approach (rather than exclusively problem/issue focused), wanting to understand an individual’s unique meaning making, resulting perspectives, experiences, and values on a micro and macro scale, and then leveraging ones natural talents and abilities even further, developing skills and addressing needs as they come up naturally. While drawing from dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) basics for coping and emotional regulation skill building, Lauren isn’t afraid to dive in deep and meet all the parts of a person, finding and following feelings (Gestalt/Internal Family Systems).

In particular, Lauren knows therapy can be hard, but it shouldn’t be scary. She often filters sessions through an artist’s lens, taking great inspiration from Maya Angelou’s quote: “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.” She meets clients as an excited, educated, willing peer, content to meet you “where you’re at” and find out where you want to go, and how you want to get there! She’ll note that not knowing is okay too.

When Lauren isn’t in the office, she’s likely in rehearsals for something… jamming or performing with her band, in a musical, on set, seeing a comedy show, falling down a research rabbit hole, knitting socks and sweaters, dancing up a storm, or on a trail ride enjoying the forest or your favourite farmers field.
